Welcome back!
I am excited to be launching my special Q&A with Madison of MLKANHNY! Thank you to everyone who participated in her giveaway, we sure had a great time putting it together for you all! Now, here is what you all have been waiting for:
Q&A with Madison Bodenmann
D: What is MLKANHNY?
M: MLKANHNY creates unique pieces of jewelry that support women expressing their own personalities while empowering them to be creative and confident in their personal style.
D: What is the story behind the name "MLKANHNY?"
M: My business name
came to me while I was writing about this dream to become a jewelry designer.
"Milk and honey" came to mind and after that moment it continued to
repeat itself over and over in my head for the next few weeks. Those words felt
like they embodied my design style and it became clear to me I had to go with
that name. I used an unconventional way of putting the business name together
by taking out the vowels except for one, the a. Voila, MLKANHNY! Designing has been a natural response in my life for as long as I can remember. I always loved the process of craft and I've been sewing clothing for the last 4 years. To be honest our quaint home doesn't leave much room for a fashion design studio, and I've been making jewelry as a form of creative expression since high school. I have always had a fascination for jewelry and the stories that it holds in my life. It has naturally evolved from this creative expression into a business over the last 10 months.
D: Do you have a team or you the sole-designer?
M: Right now I do just about everything. From designing and making the jewelry, to taking photos and running the Etsy/Blog/Facebook page and I enjoy every aspect of it. Although, my husband has majorly influenced my design aesthetic and has taken portrait photos to display some of my work on models.
D: Everyone draws there inspiration from some where, some thing, some
place...what ways to you find inspiration to make so many different beautiful pieces?
M: My inspiration
comes from whatever I am drawn to, from the waves in the ocean to an old vogue
fashion photograph. I love using colors and shapes that I see in nature. Brass
is something that I have been quite fascinated with. The natural antiqued gold
colors in it look so beautiful with the semi-precious stones I used. I have a
vintage nostalgic feel in my designs and that comes from the love of old things
with a story to tell.
D: Where do you find all the difference stones and chains that you use?
M: I believe in
supporting local businesses so I source the stones and some of the metal
locally but a lot of the brass and chains I use are from Turkey.
D: What is MLKANHNY doing now and where do you see yourself going with it in the next 5-10 years?
M: Well right now MLKANHNY gives 10% of it's proceeds directly to rescuing women and men from human trafficking at Home Of New Beginnings in Bangkok, Thailand (www.homeofnewbeginnings.com). I would love to fully support what they are doing there in the next 5 years as MLKANHNY grows. In 10 years I would love to help create dignifing opportunities for the women and men there.
